Tell us a little about yourself:
I'm a dreamer who spends time outside of work crafting beautiful eco-friendly jewelry, reading and writing, practicing yoga, and cuddling my two cats Gilbert and Cooper. I love this earth and the beauty of nature around me.
Home Town: Kalamazoo, MI
Tell us about your Mitten crafted specialty:
One of my most recent pieces of work is my Michigan necklace. I hand-cut the Michigan shape from either 100% recycled sterling silver or Michigan copper using a jeweler's saw with a tiny blade in my tiny home studio in Kalamazoo. I then, by hand, file and sand away the rough edges and finally use a high-powered tool to polish each piece so that it shines. Each one is given special attention and love. Any of my necklace chains that are not sterling silver are stainless steel. This is for two reasons. First of all, stainless steel is 100% recyclable, 50-60% of the "new" stainless steel on the market is already recycled, any stainless steel that is disposed of will not harm the soil or water, and refining it is much less toxic to the environment. Second is the benefit to the wearer which is that stainless steel does not rust, corrode, or tarnish; it lasts for many years; it is usually safe for people with metal sensitivities; and is much less expensive than precious metals.
What inspires you?:
I’m inspired each and every day by the natural world around us. I’m inspired by its colors, its materials, and its peace as well as by the need for its preservation. My products are eco-friendly and use as much recyclable resources as possible to create a lasting piece. All of my metals are recycled metals from a US-based supplier, and other materials in my pieces—guitar strings, wine corks, old sheet music, etc.—are items that have been saved from hitting the trash bins.
What is your favorite Michigan Christmas Activity?:
I have a love/hate relationship for snow. Mostly, it’s hate. But honestly, what’s Christmas without snow? I love being bundled up inside with family and friends by the fire as the snow packs us in.
What are three things you can't live without?:
Hot tea, cute kittens, and my family.
Who is your favorite Michigan artist or artisan?:
Some of my favorite Michigan artisans and artists include Crocheted Creations, La Vie en Orange, Erin Case, Lish Creations, Handmade Kalamazoo, and Bare Basics by Trista.
Why do you buy local?:
Buying local allows our neighbors to pursue their dreams—what more of a reason do you need than that?
What is your most memorable and favorite family Christmas tradition?:
I love going with my family to the late-night Christmas Eve service at church and singing the carols.
