American Jam Mojito

July 1, 2014

Let me first start by saying that I had an entirely different post planned, but to my disappointment shi** happens! For those of you who know me, know that when things don’t go as planned I get a little temperamental (that’s probably an understatement).

While lying awake thinking about my mini meltdown, I thought “Pull it together! Things aren’t always going to be perfect. It’s a blog for crying out loud!”

So here we are day two of this adventure and I have already learned my first lesson:

BLOGGING SHOULD BE FUN! DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF AND WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS DITCH THEM FOR LIMES GRAB THE BASIL, STRAWBERRY JAM AND MAKE YOURSELF A DRINK!

Basil and Strawberry Jam Mojitos

Ingredients:

2 Basil leafs chopped

2TBS Strawberry jam, preserves, or puree

1 fresh strawberry sliced

1TBS Lime juice

1TBS-2TBS (depending on how sweet you prefer) Sugar

2oz white rum (or more, depending on how the day went)

8-9oz Soda

Ice

Blueberries for garnish

*This makes one drink

Instructions:

In a drink shaker combine the basil, lime juice, sugar, strawberry, and strawberry jam.

Muddle the ingredients, until you have a pretty smooth consistency and the basil is broken down.  If you don’t have a muddle, use the back of a spoon or a whisk to press the contents.

Add the rum and stir with the muddled contents

Add ice

Add soda

Lightly shake to mix

Pour in a 12oz glass of your choice or whatever glass you can find. If you like sweet, add sugar to the rim of the glass.

Add a blueberry skewer to garnish. You could also add a lime wedge.

I used these cute little American flag toothpicks I found for a buck! They were a perfect complement for the holiday as well as my candy striped paper straws.

Just a couple things to point out, it doesn’t have to be homemade jam there are lots of yummy selections at your local market, you can try this recipe with other flavor jams, and mix according to your taste (maybe you enjoy more booze, more citrus, less sweet etc.)

Quick shout out to my little brother, Josh and my husband, Brian for being my official taste testers and for sticking with me during the first blog post, I know I was a little cray!

Enjoy and let me know if you try the recipe out. I hope you have a lovely holiday weekend and Happy Independence Day.
